Marky is no Drum n Bass stranger to Hong Kong after making his fans go wild to the latest tunes from around the world in the past. Now in 2005 Marky came back to Hong Kong and performed at Rockit Music Festival in the marquee tent to a few thousand strong crowd.
Marky talked to Nilly about what he has been up to lately, his travels and his New Year's Eve plans.
Nilly: How does it feel to be back in Hong Kong?
Marky: Hong Kong’s a great city but I’m so tired! We’re on our Asia tour and we’ve been to Japan, China, Singapore, Thailand and now Hong Kong. I’ve been here a few times before and people seem up for a good time. The crowd at Rockit Festival seems up for a good party, so yeah…apart from tiredness it feels good to be back.
Nilly: You’ve had a pretty hectic tour schedule so far. Are you taking some time off to relax and start over?
Marky: Tell me about it. We finished our set at 11pm in Bangkok last night and then we were back on a plane to Hong Kong. I’ve just been sleeping and just came here. We’ll be flying to London tomorrow and I plan to chill out for two days and work on the business side of things and then I’m off to Brazil for two weeks.
Nilly: So where are you based?
Marky: I’ve always been based in Sao Paolo, but I fly to London at least once a week. The flights are long, but I’ve become used to it now. I fly to London, DJ and then head back to Brazil for the weekends mostly.
Nilly: Do you still have your Movement fixtures at Bar Rumba and Mass in London?
Marky: Not anymore. I have one night called Marky and Friends at The End club in Central London. That is on every Thursday nights and it’s a great night. The last set this year is on the 2nd of December. They still have my name on the Movement flyers although I don’t DJ there anymore…not sure why they have it though.
Nilly: When you first moved to London who was your biggest inspiration in the Drum and Bass scene at the time?
Marky: Defiantly the Tru Playaz nights with DJ Hype. It was at The End and it was wicked. So this makes it really special for me to DJ at The End as well.
Nilly: Do you have specific MC’s that you tour with for certain parts of the world?
Marky: Yeah, when I tour Asia I normally tour with Dynamite or Stamina. They are the best MC’s for the Asia crowds.
Nilly: What is your favorite city to DJ in Asia?
Marky: Tokyo is probably the most banging, more so because the Japanese audience are always up for all kinds of parties.
Nilly: Any bookings for this New Years Eve?
Marky: I just really want to chill. Either I’ll go chill in Brazil or maybe go to Thailand for a nice well-deserved holiday.
