ABOUT SOLOS
Solos Records was founded in 2003 by Bay Area producers Roche and DJ Enso and was borne out of a desire to support the creative explosion of art happening around them, and to provide a vehicle for it to reach a wider audience. Other artists include Yao, Bookworms, CB Radio, Jovian, and Louis AKA Livingston Gains. They are an international community of musicians, visual artists and cultural critics rooted in the hip-hop and musique concr?te schools of expression. They release curiously forward-thinking music on CD, wax, podcasts and through hand-to-hand combat in spontaneous media. Many of the old "rules" no longer apply to this game; they hereby call your attention to new artists constantly reaching to the next level. www.solosrecords.com.
International Player's Anthems: Bay Area-based Solos Records Releases Second Compilation Album.
Solos in Stereo II celebrates five years of label's success.
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.,---It doesn't take long to realize that once you try to describe the sounds in the Solos Records catalog, they deliberately add a new dimension. This artists' collaborative, based in San Francisco and Hong Kong, releases Solos in Stereo II, its second compilation album, on May 21, 2008. From Bookworms' futuristic, sample-based beats and soundscapes, and CB Radio's ethereal dance tracks, to Yao's afro-beat-inspired vignettes and Roche's forward-thinking approach to hiphop, the artists on Solos Records are as diverse in their tastes as they are in their sound.
"Solos in Stereo II is basically a snapshot or diagnosis of where everyone is on the label now, which is a huge contrast from where we were when we released SIS1 in 2004, and especially from when we started the label in 2003," explains DJ Enso, a co-founding member of Solos Records. The compilation is blatantly rooted in hip-hop, but each artist branches out in unique and legitimate directions. DJ Enso expands on this: "We've done a lot of traveling lately and have picked up so many new influences. I'm in Hong Kong, Louis (Livingston Gains) is in New York, Jovian is in China, Yao went to Argentina and Ghana last year. Hip-hop is what we all came up on. We still love it, genres are not going to stop us from pushing our sound forward. But we are diverse, we're all different from each other, and each artist in this project bridges the gap between the next, in terms of sound,"
In addition to original tracks by the seven artists currently signed to Solos Records, Solos in Stereo II includes guest appearances by Rhode Island's up and coming duo Javelin, with rock anthem-style dancefloor jams ("I'm a Kidputer") and heavy hiphop beats ("Susie Cues"). Pugslee Atomz and Wes Restless join Roche on "Only When I'm Dreaming," dropping verses and bringing the soul of Chicago's hiphop scene with them. Jonesy shamelessly represents the South Bay Area, dropping lyrical treats on Bookworms' "One Mo Gin."
As for the task of nailing down a genre for Solos Records, they still hesitate to give it a name. "It's way too general to group ourselves in any one genre," explains Yao. "Genres by themselves do their music a disservice; it limits their sound. Most (contemporary) music crosses several genres." Or, as Solos co-founder Roche puts it simply, "We've got crazy beats and new dancefloor classics, all on an international playing field. Solos in Stereo II is really a project about movement and expansion."
Release and listening parties to be held in May/June 2008 in San Francisco, Oakland, New York, Buenos Aires, Shanghai and Hong Kong.
