Some may think that but i dont really think that is true.
It is however true that areas such as lankwai are gwylo orientated, which may give the impression that the club scene also follows the trend of gwylo's only. But if u go to raves you will probably notice there are alot more chinesse people than there are Western.........
All depends on where and when i guess but it aint only gwylo....

But you are not thinking of one main factor.
A lot of hongers think its cool to be there, not nesscary be in the music or anything.
For them its just cool to hang there.

So I dont want to offened ppl but personally I think there are only a few hongers who are leader in that culture but a lot are just followers or just dont know what the hell they are doing there. That explains all that amount of turn around on raves. Also raves are dead already in Europe and North America.

we finally have a discussion going on in this website =)

jimbob> never have local chinese been interested in "only cantopop" even if you trace back 30 years, a good proportion of locals have followed jazz, blues, foreign pop especially the bands. if you hang out at clubs or what they would call "discos" in tsimshatsui, wanchai, they are all locals. ABCs and XBCs are on top of pop and dance music like any overseas brought-up kid...

mcfly> actually, the funny thing is, i go "clubbing" a lot, especially in lankwai and soho. i dont know any "club" that is gwylo oriented. there are heaps of "bars" that are ethnic oriented though for example Insomnia and Wanchai is always gwylo......Parrot Bar is always local......The Fong is always ABC and XBCs.....Maddogs is always young foreigners etcetc. i know people will dispute this, but in the central area i would loosely classify 2 types of clubbers. firstly you get the regulars, who will always hang out at Drop, always hang out at ING, they don't change much. then you have the hip and trendy group - they might consist of rich kids, models, young ABC professionals, expats - these guys go whereever they feel the club "is it". witness: Queens in the 1st 3 months of opening, Red rocks 1 year ago, Cclub 1/2 year ago, Paa/Drop/Kee a few months ago. then they get sick of it, the crowd dies away, quality of people nosedives.

chemical> you did say "a lot" and not "all" but i still dont really agree with your claims. i cant speak for locals, but take any typical raver or clubber in HK, theres a VERY high chance he/she is born or educated overseas. chinese, exposed to western culture. i guarantee you the greatest response that you will get in asking why they hang out? not coz they think they are cool, they think they are different - its because THIS is the way they like to chill out, relax and have fun. raving and clubbing in HK for us is a lifestyle, a way to keep us sane. being work freaks, these activities allow hongers to meet and catch up with friends and simply have a good time. i totally disagree that doing * is to look cool.

leaders or followers - they aint need this distinction in HK. the honger mentality is to chill out and meet people, so their tolerance for music genres differences is very high. i know some gwylo friends, they follow a few DJs and type of music closely, they refuse to see any others. cool....but u will be bored shxtless if you are in HK. i myself, go raving once every 2-3 months and clubbing every week, and music genre isnt THAT important to me as the quality of the DJ, the interaction of the crowd, whether my friends are present, whether the E is good, atmosphere etc.

I really do think music information is still very minimal in hk magazines and online sites, this site helps a lot but magazines should do a lot more, pity hmv magazine was closed that could have been a good resource if it was bigger

Ztudent:

Yeah i think that was a bit of a miss type... What i meant by gwylo orientated is Ethnically orientated... Sorry i probably wrote that when i just got home or summin...
Basically what i was saying is exactly what u just explained in ur response... Lol.....

And also i must agree with the idea that hong Kong people dont really go to clubs for the music, they just seem to go where everyone says is the "Place to be". Raves also seem to be more for the atmosphere than the music or the dj's. I know many people that go to all the raves and clubs and say they live for dance music yet many recognise such names as for example "john digweed". Even though he is the 3rd ranked dj (I believe... dont hold me to that). Anywayz gtg out but happy to see some discussion. And glad to speak to u ztudent...

zstudent, I am speaking of locals, not ppl whom have lived aboard for their entire life or have been living aboard for a number of years. The way of thinking is quite different, and ppl treat them different also, dont know why.

again I am not trying to step on anyone toes but I am just speaking of my own experience.

Look at the plus side of things, at least there is some good discussion on this board, usually its just dead.

Anywayz going back to playing some records now, got some promo stuff in and cant wait till I play them out.

Rave culture dead in Europe? Well here in England we still throw big outdoor illegal parties that attract 3000 or so ravers! Anyways, back to the subject, From the gigs I played in HK over September I gathered that there really was no difference on the dance floor between clubs in England and HK.

The gigs I played in HK I had to work a little harder to get the crowd going, but then again, that's what I was getting paid to do! Instead of posing behind the dex in my latest Armani suit (I don't actually own one-that's an example!) doing the occasional 4 bar mix I did my usual, danced around a lot and sweated like hell (people were throwing packets of tissues at me!) but got the dance floor animated and looking like they were learning to be a little bit less reserved and actually enjoy the music. All you had to do was look onto the floor and you could instantly tell the people that were:

A:Mashed and going for it big time whilst loving the tunes!
B:Not mashed and still doing the above
C:Mashed and not knowing what the hell to do with themselves
D:Mashed, not caring where the hell they are and gibbering away to themselves on a couch somewhere

Pretty much all the kind of people you'd have met at Cream (or any club in the country) in Liverpool at one of Seb Mundane's gigs. It was either an image thing (they'd go home and listen to Robbie and not even own a dance CD) or you were there coz you loved the music (they'd go home and stick some hard trance on and carry on until the next night!).

Well, that's my 10 pennies worth! Cheers!
