TAPEO introduces authentic Spanish tapas dining experience to Hong Kong
For the first time in Hong Kong, diners will be able to experience a genuine tapas bar environment, along with food and wine sourced from around Spain. TAPEO will provide an informal and relaxed environment where patrons can choose a series of different dishes to accompany a few glasses of Spanish wine or sherry, when it opens its doors in early July 2008.
A highly social environment, TAPEO will replicate some of the most fashionable tapas bars across Spain by seating diners next to one another at the bar. Here they overlook the open kitchen where chefs work to create the most authentic and freshest tapas dishes to order.
Eaten and enjoyed by 40 million Spanish, tapas can best be described as small plates of food to be enjoyed with a glass of wine. Diners order as many different dishes or plates as they want, giving them the chance to order a variety of foods and flavours – playing to Hong Kong’s love of sharing food. To complement the food at TAPEO will be a number of Spanish wine varieties and different Sherries from the region, all available by the glass. This allows diners the freedom to mix and match their wine to suit the flavours of the different dishes.
TAPEO is the latest bar/restaurant from Concept Creations, owners of hip bar Soda and popular Belgium restaurant Frites. Katrina Mayer, managing director of Concept Creations, says, “We aim to bring an authentic style of Spanish tapas to the palates of Hong Kong. Playing to the Spaniards love of spontaneity, TAPEO will ensure a buzzing and vibrant atmosphere that sees diners sharing the bar seating area and plates of delicious and genuine Spanish tapas.”
TAPEO’s head chef, Aiden Harley Burn, has created a range of plates that use both imported Spanish ingredients as well fresh locally-sourced and imported seafood and meats. Aiden developed his trade working for a variety of leading Michelin-starred restaurants in London and Ireland including the Adare Manor, Tom Aikens’ restaurant in London and Bleu Modern in Dublin.
Aiden has developed a menu that includes genuine Spanish sourced ingredients that include aged Iberian ham, smoked paprika and olive oils. The tapas plates itself will offer every thing from the infamous Pedro Peppers (which sees one spicy one hidden amongst the milder flavours), and Prawns Plancha to the traditional Ham Tortilla. For dessert, patrons can choose from a range that includes Curros & Chocolate (Spanish donuts with chocolate) and Crème Catalana, the Spanish favourite.
