Berlin producer/DJ Fidelity Kastrow has unveiled details of her upcoming single 21st Century Girl in which she outlines her manifesto for female emancipation over crunchy electro-tech (ironically?) 80s tinged beats.

The track (co-produced and co-written by Berlin MFS legend Mark Reeder, Michael Adam and Jonty Skrufff) has been selected as the official theme tune of the Czech Republic’s upcoming festival Summer Of Love and details Fidelity’s uncompromising philosophy of life.

“The 21st Century girl is my inner heroine that I try to follow,” she explains, “She has the courage to seize full power over her own life, she breaks free of all expectations of how she should behave (virginal?, modest?, demure?, always friendly?), what she must become (wife?, mother?, housekeeper?), be or not be, do or not do, feel or not feel. She doesn't waste time worrying about what others might think of her,“ she adds.

The 21st century girl is also highly sensitive about questions, Fidelity stresses, with topics such as what a 21st Century Girl should- or shouldn’t do- being strictly taboo.

“The song is about girls refusing to conform to whatever preset concept as to how a girl should be. So first and foremost: a 21st Century Girl has deleted the word ‘should’ from her vocabulary,” she says.

“She understands that she is neither here nor there if she tries to fit in. That only because someone says ‘you are this’ or ‘you are that’ doesn't make you this nor that. That yes, generalisation keeps life simple and convenient BUT (and that is a big but) at the same time it’s terrifyingly limiting.“

She also rejects the label ‘feminist’ (‘It sounds like you’re trying to put me in a box, or are you trying to squeeze me into a specific role here?‘ she laughs) as robustly as the question ‘where does 21st Century Girls belong Berlin’s minimal scene.

“21st Century Girls don't fit in,” she explains. “They break the rules and disrupt the standards, they mix-up the mash-up.”

As well as regularly headlining Berlin clubs Neon Raiders and Tresor (who recently labelled her ‘one of Berlin’s sexiest and most provocative DJs’) Fidelity is a resident DJ at London’s infamous fetish institution Torture Garden, where she’s optimistic her message will be understood.

“I'll be delighted if TG gals take a liking in my song,” she agrees, “I think they might be at the forefront of 21st Century Girl thinking.”

And what’s her take on 21st Century dressing?

“I love fashion as a means of expressing all my emotions, whether that’s being playful, experimental and/ or daring,” says Fidelity, “I love mixing time periods and genders and celebrating individuality. It's not what you wear, it's how you wear it.”
