Wednesday night isn’t usually the time for a night out, but I broke my rules for my visiting cousins from Paris and brought them to the 5 months old G&T Cocktail Bar down Hollywood Road in Central. Having heard a lot about the fabulous Gin and Tonic mixes this bar offers; we were welcomed to a cozy interior with a huge “Keep Calm and Drink Gin and Tonic” poster right at the door.
Small but crisp, the venue has a big window right at the end of the space, looking out towards Soho. We settled comfortably in the middle bar table and were immediately served with glasses of clear gin with rosemary and lime in one and lemon grass with a slice of grapefruit on top in another.
Small bottles of tonic water on the side, owner Miki poured down the water into the glass and the drink slowly fizzed with scents of alcohol and herbs. With the rosemary especially imported from London; the swallow is smooth and easy, but swells pleasantly with an aftertaste of freshness from the spice and the mixed gin. I personally preferred the lemon grass cup Sloe Sour, as it taints the taste buds with a fruity sweetness which is very appealing to females.
Laughing and chattering away with a drink in our hand and chip nibbles on the side; we were then presented with the bar’s very own mix of Gin Oolong tea. With a slice of thin lemon peel in the cup, the G& Tea is iced and unique to the bar; not to be tasted anywhere else in Hong Kong.
With an appearance no different from regular Oolong tea; Miki exclaims that the tea and even the tea set are especially ordered from China to ensure an authentic and memorable experience. The true east meets west, the drink is elegant and the perfect choice for a relaxed night out with a group of friends.
The fun doesn’t end there and as we sip down our alcoholic tea from pretty glass cups, our third round comes along, consisting of one tall and one short glass. One sweet with tenderness of cherries and the other resembling a mojito, we were all very proud of the last round, suiting for boys and girls on a laid back night out.
Never a fan of Gin and Tonic, the bar’s different way of mixing with carefully thought out presentations really imprinted a new experience for me with the liqueur. A great venue for a birthday party or a small occasion; I believe this hidden home to around 80 different Gins is not far from claiming as the top Gin and Tonic Bar for tasters here in Hong Kong.
