Adam F Reunites With Positiva Founder

Drum & bass pioneer Adam F has teamed up with ex EMI Records executive Nick Halkes to produce new single 'Shut The Lights Off!' some 13 years after Halkes first signed him to EMI’s Positiva as an unknown artist.

The commercial dance imprint succeeded in selling over 100,000 units of Adam’s still acclaimed debut album Colours and delivering him a string of top 40 pop hits, though struggled to push him further as drum & bass stayed resolutely underground.

In 2001, his follow up album Kaos introduced a radical change in direction towards US style hip hop via contributions from the likes of LL Cool J and Beenie Man though similarly failed to provide a crossover hit.

The album was also undoubtedly hit by fallout from September 11, not least since its initial artwork included images of apocalyptic Manhattan skylines including smoking twin tower skyscrapers. The album also attracted harsh criticism from media at the time, as Mixmag managing editor James Mowbray recalled in an interview with Skrufff several years ago.

“We were laughing in the office the other day about a review we did of an Adam F album a few years ago, the one he did with all the rappers. We slated it and said it was rubbish,” James recalled.

“The problem was that at time the Mixmag office was next to the Kiss FM studios where Adam had a show and he came in one day and ‘spat the dummy’. He said ‘you wankers, blah blah blah, who do you think you are?’ and there was a big argument,” he said.

“When you’re doing a magazine and putting opinions in there of course you’re going to upset people from time and time,” he chuckled.

Subsequently dropped by EMI in one of the major label’s first massive culls of artists, he went on to work with Ali G (scoring his movie Ali G Indahouse) before setting up his own highly successful label Breakbeat Kaos and developing a similarly lucrative career as a DJ.

Halkes also left EMI soon after, launching commercial trance label Incentive with Ministry Of Sound before reinventing himself last year as ‘Horx’ and teaming up with Adam as a fellow producer. New single 'Shut The Lights Off! also delves into the duo’s past, featuring rapping from rapper Redman, who last worked with them eight years ago on Kaos.
