Tell us a little bit about how you got started as a DJ / Producer? Who was your biggest inspiration?
I think it has to be Fatboy Slim, Coldcut and DJ Yoda. I somehow had a bunch of copied CDs and minidiscs when i was a school (which wasnt that long ago). Fatboy Slim - gangsta trippin was on a now compilation, Coldcut was on a Ninja Tune cd i nicked from my dad's girlfriend and DJ Yoda was being passed around the school like a naked picture of a hot girl. i didnt really know how to describe the music and i still don't. That is the way I think about my music, I dont want you to be able to describe it, I just want you to watch a live show or listen to a track. oh yea... also Dr Dre - 2001 - that sh*t made me start producing for real!!!
Will this be your first time in Hong Kong? Is there anything that you are looking forward to doing or seeing in particular?
Food! obviously I'm looking forward to the gig but i really want to eat some good food. I love asian food and I'm learning how to cook so it's something on my to do list.
How do you feel that DJing and producing has changed over the last few years?
People are getting younger and more clever. even i have to keep up with the amount of producers and styles. it's crazy. sometimes it's a good thing, other times i feel swamped. everything has filtered down into the box... just using a computer to do it. again... sometimes this is a good thing... but for me now I love using old hardware, like retro keyboards, synths and effects pedals... thats where I feel most connected to the music. probably because the sound I get is closer to the music I grew up listening to.
What was your favourite memory of 2011 and what do you have planned for 2012?
Bestival and Glastonbury were my favourite memories of 2011. they were both just epic. I also released my debut album 'beats, treats and all things unique', shot a video with maxi jazz from Faithless and remixed Little Dragon, DJ Shadow, Chromeo and Beardyman... that's all!
What can we expect from your upcoming performance at Volar?
I'm literally going to tear the place apart. I'm ready to cause some serious mayhem on the dancefloor. I've got some surprises prepared and I'm ready to get a little crazy. I just hope the soundsystem can be turned up LOUD!!!!! we are gonna party seriously!
Aside from your DJ equipment, name you top three touring essentials.
If i have to leave my clothes bag behind and travel extra light..... boxers, toothbrush, ipad. cleanliness and airport/plane entertainment are essential!
What is the weirdest thing that you’ve seen from the DJ booth?
I was playing a hip-hop set a few years back (when i was just djing, not playing live shows) and this guy handed me a piece of paper saying "have you got any happy hardcore" - i took me 5 minutes to recover from confusion and laughter.
Do you have any pre gig rituals?
I get pretty nervous you know so i just try and calm down. cup of tea always works!
Who in your opinion are the best up-and-coming producers at the moment?
Koan sound make dubstep - they are seriously funky with it! Little Dragon are my favourite band and kidda is an incredible producer/songwriter.
If you weren’t a DJ/Producer what would you be doing?
Sitting at home wondering why I wasn't djing and producing!
