Tell us a little bit about how you got started as a DJ? Who was your biggest inspiration?

I started DJing when I was about 12 years old. I was always interested in music from a very young age so DJing seemed like the perfect hobby for me.  My older brother bought turntables because he wanted to learn to DJ but he never really got the hang of it and then went off to university and left his decks at home.  I would sneak into his room after school every day to practice and eventually realised that I was picking it up quite quickly. I started watching scratch videos of the Technics DMC World Championships and slowly learnt how to scratch just by watching DJ battles. I would say my biggest inspiration is DJ Jazzy Jeff. I used to listen to his early albums with the Fresh Prince and try to emulate his routines.

Will this be your first time in Hong Kong?  Is there anything that you are looking forward to doing or seeing in particular?
I'd like to check out Victoria Peak to see over the whole of Hong Kong.

How do you feel that DJing and producing has changed over the last few years?
The biggest thing that has changed with DJing and producing is the technology. DJ's no longer need to carry around bags of heavy vinyl to their gigs because everything is digital and producers don't have to rent big expensive studio's to make music.  Producers are now making music on their laptops.

What was your favourite memory of 2012 and what do you have planned for 2013?
I have quite a few favorite memories of 2012. Djing at Coachella, winning an award for Best DJ at the London Club Awards, and DJing Gwyneth Paltrow's 40th birthday, DJing for Jay Z....the list goes on.

What can we expect from your upcoming performances at Boujis?

A fun energetic party set!

Aside from your DJ equipment, name your top three touring essentials.

iPhone, laptop, Haribo's.

What is the weirdest thing that you've seen from the DJ booth?
A man with breasts sticking a toilet brush up his bum. (This was obviously a box show).

Do you have any pre gig rituals?
Sleep, go through music on my laptop, drink a can of Redbull.

Who in your opinion are the best up-and-coming producers at the moment?
Cyril Hahn, Bobby Tank, Bondax, Dismantle.

If you weren't a DJ what would you be doing?
I honestly don't know...

DJ Kayper will be in Hong Kong at Boujis on 15th March 2013. CLICK HERE for more information.
