Tell us a little bit about how you got started as a DJ / Producer? Who was your biggest inspiration?
Well we started with music long time ago, playing guitar in punk rock bands, djing at techno parties, producing hip hop beats, we always loved music and every different genre...we focused on djing in the last 6/7 years since we started this Djs From Mars project, but we didn't have an inspiration or someone to follow: it was just natural starting producing mashups since we were resident djs in Turin and we were tired of playing the same top40 tracks every week....so we started doing our own edits....and that turned into a real project very soon :)
Will this be your first time in Macao? Is there anything that you are looking forward to doing or seeing in particular?
Actually it's our second time in Cubic, and it was just amazing when we were there first...so we expect it to be as awesome as it already was!!
How do you feel that DJing and producing has changed over the last few years?
We could fill pages about this topic. Unfortunately today djing is very easy. Back in the days you had a strong passion for music, you were spending all of your money in records and equipment, and it was not for everyone. Plus, it was not "cool" to be a dj: you were the only one working while everyone was having fun.
Today it looks like you can download a software and the Beatport Top100 and have a gig..the bad thing is that too many people is just doing it to look cool, and not because they love music...but we think that only real passion can bring you somewhere, so it's just a matter of time, when the dj trend will be over, only the good ones will keep on doin it..
What was your favourite memory of 2014 so far and what do you have planned for the rest of the year?
2014 was amazing, we toured a lot in America, we're just back from Australia, we toured all over Europe, we had the chance to play in the Hawaaii, we released a new Bootzilla volume and we have a lot of unreleased tracks to be released yet....so it was definitely a good year, plus, the Top100 position in DjMag last year helped us a lot in finding better shows...
What can we expect from your upcoming performance at Cubic Macao?
We have a new volume of Bootzilla, just released along with a phone app (a real videogame). So we have 20 brand new tracks to play in our sets, and they're a bit different from our usual stuff...we introduced different elements like Dubstep and Drum'n'Bass beats, hip hop samples, rock guitars and vocals, downtempo tracks, reggae breaks....we tried to work on music at 360° and we're very happy about the final result...so our set will be not just a 4/4 130bpm trip....expect the unexpected :)
Aside from your DJ equipment, name you top three touring essentials.
We're very easy about Dj equipment, we play CDs so we just need 2 players and a mixer....aside of that, in tour we always bring our Studio Beats Headphones, they're great for hotel room productions, they really give the "studio feeling" which is difficult for other headphones...
Then, we always bring all types of clothes, because we never know where we'll be heading to: just went into snow in Australia, and last year we were in Sweden in the beach and sun....so we're always prepared for every kind of wheather :)
last but not least: tablet full of movies to kill time :)
What is the weirdest thing that you’ve seen from the DJ booth?
probably we cannot say that in a public interview :)
Do you have any pre gig rituals?
not actual rituals but yea we try to be at the club a bit earlier than the set start time so we can relax a bit, get the mood, avoid tracks that have already been played, understand the crowd...sometimes it's not possible because of the busy schedule, planes, connection flights, delays, but when possible we try to do that...
Who in your opinion are the best up-and-coming producers at the moment?
some guys from Italy called Reset!, they just released an amazing album...
and can't wait for new stuff from Zedd..and ah, Porter Robinson just released a masterpiece! "Worlds" is our favourite 2014 album so far, simply awesome, and different!
If you weren’t a DJ/Producer what would you be doing?
homeless - music is the only thing we can do in our life
What tracks/ projects can we look forward to in the upcoming months?
a new EP with 6 tracks, new Bootzilla mashups about to be released, and in september we'll start working on a full album...stay tuned!
What would be your dream collaboration?
Bob Marley! Can you imagine bringing him to the studio and let him play with all those knobs? Unfortunately it will never happen....
DJs From Mars will be at Club Cubic on 11th October 2014. CLICK HERE.
