“Discobelle.net is a blog that focuses on free downloads of club music. We post MP3, videos or just fun stuff that we find.”
Despite its minimalist even humble self description, Swedish website Discobelle is one of the most influential and popular music blogs in the world, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each month including hundreds if not thousands of producers, pluggers and DJs keen to be featured.
Just a handful are selected each week and Discobelle’s Niklas Mijdema shared with Skrufff this week a few insider tips on how they make their choices.
Skrufff (Jonty Skrufff): Where should a producer/ DJ start who is hoping to attract Discobelle's attention?
Niklas Mijdema (Discobelle): “Have a plan about what you want with your music.”
Skrufff: What are some of the more common mistakes you come across from people hoping you’ll feature their tracks?
Niklas Mijdema (Discobelle): “Doing tracks from all types of genres, not finishing your tracks enough, sending mass emails to everyone.”
Skrufff: How do you decide which artists/ tracks to cover generally?
Niklas Mijdema (Discobelle): “We usually select tracks based on contacts, since we receive so much emails it is hard to listen to them all. A description about what to expect from the things you send is great so we can have a clue beforehand about whether it is or isn’t for us. But don’t lie, listening to something you said would sound like "insert favourite artist" and sounding like some boring indie band doesn’t get you on the site.”
Skrufff: How much attention do you pay to how many facebook/ twitter followers producers have? How much does it matter?
Niklas Mijdema (Discobelle): “None whatsoever. Though sometimes comments on soundcloud can help.”
Skrufff: How much do you follow particular websites? (Resident Advisor? Any
others?) and/ or print media?
Niklas Mijdema (Discobelle): “Not that much really. Though we do surf around like anyone else.”
Skrufff: What advice do you have for an unknown producer/ DJ hoping to get their name out there generally?
Niklas Mijdema (Discobelle): “Do something you believe in 100% and don't overfeed people with your stuff. Get it out there when its 100% ready and if its good enough people will listen to it.”
