National Geographic Brand Ibiza the World’s Sleaziest Island

National Geographic Traveller Magazine published the results of their annual top island guide this week, in which 522 ‘travel experts’ placed Ibiza second from bottom, out of 111 ‘selected islands and archipelagos’.

"Ibiza is not Spanish anymore. Or Balaeric. It is a colony of Europe and, at times, seems more a colony of British ravers. Half the island is still 'natural.' The other half has been lost completely to the party circuit”, one writer complained.
"Ibiza cannot get rid of the vicious circle it went through a few years ago,” another added, “Booze, partying, and drugs are a big part of an increasingly sleazy scene."

The writers ranked ‘cloudy, beach-poor islands’ like the Shetlands and Isle Of Skye at the top of their poll, to the consternation of Pacha chief Danny Whittle.

“Who cares what these people think; if your thing is counting sheep then Ibiza probably isn’t the ideal destination, but then if you like nice beaches, cool hotels and great social life then the Shetlands is probably not ideal either,” he pointed out.

“Have they been to Ibiza recently,” Danny continued.

“Ibiza is what it is, there is no need for excuses. If people look beyond the clubbing, social element (which is the best in the world) they’ll also find an amazing island with fantastic local people. This island hasn’t become famous because it’s a hell hole but because millions of people love it and enjoy its reality.”

Danny went on to praise Ibiza’s’ ‘sport, archaeology, museums and confirmed that Pacha have no plans in the immediate future to relocate to the Shetlands (‘not unless sheep take up dancing, drinking and enjoying life a little’.)

“In a way Ibiza has become like a superstar as a destination and some of the press just look for the negatives to get column inches,” he added, “Then you see the same reporters jumping around the Space terrace having a ball.”

National Geographic’s worst ranked island this year was St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, which one critic described as a ‘totally spoiled and low-quality, high-volume destination."

“The native population is unfriendly,” another travel hack cautioned, “With a coldness that borders on outright hostility."

Stare For Sexual Success

Looking at someone directly increases a person’s attractiveness, according to new research published this week by Scottish psychology school The Face Research Lab.

The Aberdeen University beauty analysts reported that as expected people find happy, healthy faces appealing though also responded favourably to the direction in which a person looked at them.

"Faces that were looking directly at the viewer were judged more attractive than faces with averted gaze,” study chief Dr Claire Conway told magazine Proceedings of the Royal Society this week “"This shows that people prefer faces that appear to like them and that attraction is not simply about physical beauty, she added (Reuters).

The same organization published another beauty study earlier this year, which showed that women find men more attractive when other women smile at them, explaining a common condition noted by many men in relationships.

"We tend to think about attraction as a personal thing and personal choice, but we actually seem to be quite influenced by what other people think,” head researcher Dr Jones told the Scotsman in January,

"You hear a lot of men saying 'when I was with my girlfriend I had a lot of interest from other women, but since we've split up that interest has vanished'. We've shown that this is probably true,” he added.

‘’Erotic filmmaker’ Tony Comstock also emphasised the importance of smiling this week, in an article about the explosive growth of amateur porn this week, in London’s Metro newspaper.

“Smile,” he advised in his top tips for making a DIY porn clip, “The most consistently sexy thing a person can do is smile. Yes, pouty can be oh-so sexy, but an authentic smile shows you're having fun. It also gives a feeling of reality to the images that commercial porn doesn't have,” he said.

In more porn news, Japanese icon Nana Natsume warned this week that ‘facials’ can ‘hurt like hell’ and suggested men seeking a lasting relationship should do their best to avoid them if at all possible.

“If the heat of the moment does result in a shot in the eye, the best way to treat it is by washing with milk,” she advised, “Milk has the effect of washing sperm cleanly away. That's common knowledge on the sets of adult movies." (Spa Magazine/ Mainichi)

Judge Jules Says Snitch On Smelly Clubbers

Judge Jules called on clubbers to inform on smelly clubbers this week and complained that the UK’s recent smoking ban is causing people’s body odour (BO) to ruin otherwise great nights.

Jules suggested the smell of smoke had been previously masking people’s BO and complained that ‘the more off-the-hook and energetic the atmosphere is the more the smelly minority start stinking’.

“Somebody’s gotta’ take a stand,” he decreed on his weekly blog at, “ I want to start a campaign for clean smelling clubbers to name and shame the smelly people on the dance floor to embarrass them into washing before going out next time. Equally, it’s time that all venues introduced scented dance-floors. Harass your local club manager on the issue, and the gagging will eventually stop,’ he urged.

Mikki Most from Trailer Trash said they’ve definitely noticed more body odour at their tiny London On The Rocks headquarters, telling Skrufff ‘hot, sweaty dancing bodies are great for the club but tend to smell a bit after a few hours on the dancefloor’.

“Jules’ suggestion of scented dance floors is a great idea and I’m sure some of the bigger venues with some money to burn would consider it,” he agreed, “However, most of these have pretty good air conditioning anyway so I don't thing it's so much of a problem. It's the small sweatbox places like us where it's more of an issue - most of which don’t have much spare cash so I very much doubt it will happen.

Keeping a can of deodorant in your record bag isn't a bad idea and if any really bad offenders come into the box you can always give them a quick blast,” he suggested.

Armani Code aftershave wearing fellow London club promoter (Fonteyn said no-one stank at their Nuke Em All grand opening last month (‘We had a light smoke machine on, whether that masked any smells I don't know’, he suggested) and was also less taken with perfumed clubs

“I think scented dance floors might be a nice idea but with the majority of UK venue owners being total cheapskates, the reality will mean clubs stinking of nasty air freshener (a particular dislike of mine),” he laughed. “I think people will have to just scrub up.”

Canadian electro-disco diva Betty Forde told Skrufff they’ve had am off and on smoking ban in clubs there for years and said so many Canadians smell so much that smoke never hid BO anyway though stressed her main complaint is bad breath.

“As a DJ, when someone comes up to you to bug you while you're working and ask you stupid questions and make stupid requests, although it’s very loud and tempting to just tell them you can't hear them, beware of doing so, for they will not retreat, rather they will get right in your face and shower you with their bad breath and spit,” she warned, “And if you're not careful some of the gross white foam caked in the corners of their mouth will dislodge and fall onto your mixer.”

“And not to go off on one, but once Stinkmitt played with this band in San Francisco, the Judy Experience, and their whole trip was to actually smell as bad as possible, they thought it was  "art", she laughed.

“So you can imagine how much the stage f**king stank after they got off and we went on. They totally outstank StinkMitt, that's for sure. I am still having smelly nightmares about them.”

M1NT,  the world’s first shareholders’ club started in 2004 in London by Australian entrepreneur Alistair Paton and frequented by celebrities, billionaires and socialites, opened its sister club in Hong Kong to a fanfare of publicity in November 2006.

M1NT Hong Kong has since proven to be an overwhelming financial success for its 250 well-healed shareholders and rapidly become the place to ‘see and be seen’. With live sharks prowling the VIP rooms, international art adorning its entrance, fingerprint detection entry, chauffer limousines and catamarans as toys for members, M1NT Hong Kong has become the thing of legend in social circles, highlighted by the fact that the club sells more Krug than any one else in all of Asia.

This week sees a rare event for shareholders of any new business, let alone one in its first year of operation and one with such a huge social and lifestyle kick. M1NT Hong Kong is distributing over HK$6,000,000 in dividends to its 250 hand-picked shareholders as a result of better than expected financial results with gross revenue 26% ahead of projections and net profits 24% ahead of projections. In addition shareholders have seen their shares increase in value by 100% in 12 months. The club continues to benefit from an unusually lengthy lease at its Hollywood Road premises from Henderson Land and unquestionably M1NT Hong Kong is set to become an iconic members club of historical significance in the traditional ‘antiques district’ of Hong Kong.

Alistair Paton, Founder and Group CEO said, “the success of our unique business model is again proven by these results. With hundreds of powerfully important people with a vested interest in M1NT’s success, marketing costs are reduced and revenues increased. There is no debt to service and cash flow is strong. Combined with our passionate management team, M1NT is a first class product that professional investors find irresistible”.

M1NT Hong Kong’s Managing Director Andrew Lewis will host the club’s star-studded list of shareholder’s that includes celebrities and business tycoons all in attendance tonight to celebrate the success of their private club from 8pm at the club’s first year anniversary party. “What a stellar year we have pulled off with terrific results for our shareholder’s and I’m proud of all the team’s efforts and I look forward to celebrating these achievements tonight with a few glasses of Krug. ” said Andrew Lewis.

Following the overwhelming success of M1NT Hong Kong, the company also released plans for its biggest ever project – M1NT Shanghai.

After 14 months of lengthy negotiations, M1NT Global Holdings has secured “the best property in Shanghai” said Alistair Paton, “to undertake our biggest project to date and spend US$15M to develop the best modern-day members club in the world’s largest and fastest growing city”.

M1NT Shanghai, located in the city’s most famous and fashionable district on the top floor of Number 8 on the Bund, has spectacular panoramic views. These plans have been a closely guarded secret with details known only by an inner sanctum of 4 individuals within M1NT Global Holdings until now. With key partners in Shanghai, M1NT  has achieved its objective of securing a site that is large enough to cater to 800 guests for dinning, dancing and cocktails at any one time whilst also having the ability to showcase Shanghai’s spectacular skyline by day or night.

M1NT Shanghai will encompass 15,000 square feet of the 7th floor of ‘M1NT Mansion’ with the remaining floors to be re-developed into a landmark luxury high-end themed property for  shareholders and members to enjoy.

Rumours of Gordon Ramsay’s former Head Chef, Ian Pengelley joining forces with M1NT to deliver his international award winning Pan Asian cuisine in the clubs exclusive dining room, can now be officially confirmed.

Ian Pengelley will be attending M1NT Hong Kong’s First Year Anniversary tonight to reveal some of his controversial concepts for M1NT Shanghai.  Commenting on his new role after arriving in Hong Kong earlier today, Pengelley said, “After living in Asia for 5 years in my 20s, I can’t wait to get my teeth stuck into this project. I have worked with the best in the world and have been offered a fair share of opportunities and the reasons I have decided to team up with my old pal Alistair Paton are endless.”

Once again the designs of M1NT will stretch the imagination with Hong Kong’s Alan Chan tasked with the concept design which is to include a glass ceiling with live manta rays keeping a watchful eye on diners.

Private rooms will be visible only through an oxygen curtain which is located behind a 14-metre hammerhead shark tank that stretches the entrance of the club’s roof top.

Only 10% of this prized project will be available to all existing M1NT members and shareholders, to own part of what will be the most exclusive property in the world’s fastest growing city.

M1NT Background

M1NT in each city is owned by the club’s patrons; 250 individual shareholders own a portion of the club’s business and receive a percentage of the company’s profits whilst enjoying life-long membership without annual membership fees.

In addition to the 250 shareholders, 1,000 traditional membership applications are accepted.  Traditional members pay an annual fee and do not receive a percentage of the club’s profits. The 1,000 members form a waiting list for shares which are bid for, once they become available.

M1NT was launched in London in 2005 followed by Hong Kong in November 2006.  M1NT Shanghai will open in 2007 followed by M1NT Beijing and M1NT Dubai in 2008 plans with plans to expand to a further 5 cities and having 10 clubs by 2010.

M1NT Festival House launched at the 60th anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival in May, hosting major parties for films in competition as well as playing host to a full schedule of film industry gatherings, private dinners and corporate events for Ivana Trump and Kurt Russel among other notable identities.

Smoking At Home Banned In California

Council officials in Belmont, California passed new legislation this week which makes smoking illegal in almost all flats and homes in the city.

Under the new regulations, smokers living in apartment blocks will now only be allowed to light up in ‘designated outdoor; with authorities prosecuting whenever neighbours snitch on each other.

New of the ultra-strict ban (which also prohibits smoking from all outdoor cafes and open air smoking areas connected to clubs and restuarants) emerged as cops in Scranton, Pennsylvania arrested a woman for swearing at her toilet this week, when an off duty officer who lived nearby heard her cursing at her loo.

Ms Dawn Herb now faces up to 90 days in jail, the Times-Tribune reported this week, after being charged with ‘disorderly conduct’ after she ignored the cop’s orders to ‘keep it down’.

"The toilet was overflowing and leaking down into the kitchen and I was yelling for my daughter to get the mop," Ms Herb told the newspaper, "It doesn't make any sense. I was in my house. It's not like I was outside or drunk,” she pleaded.

In more domestic crime news, William Antonio Serrano, 22, was remanded in custody in a Texas jail this week, after he allegedly stabbed to death his flatmate in a drunken argument.

Mr Serrano reportedly stabbed his victim repeatedly after being taunted over his ‘smelly feet’, the Washington Post reported.

The story could have ominous implications for clubland, judging by comments on Judge Jules’ blog this week, in which he highlighted (not for the first time) an increasingly alarming consequence of the recent UK smoking ban.

“Turnmills is always good, in fact it’s legendary. The only snag was that I could smell quite a lot of BO (body odour) from the crowd,” Jules complained, “The smoking ban has left many late night dance clubs often smelling unsavoury to say the least. Scented dancefloors must surely follow,” he predicted. (

Robot Sex & Love Shocker

Artificial intelligence expert David Levy from the University of Maastricht suggested that humans will be marrying robots within 50 years, this week, as he published his thesis on ‘Intimate Relationships with Artificial Partners’.

Mr Levy pointed out that interracial and same sex marriages were taboo until relatively recently and said advances in technology mean the key reasons why humans fall in love (such as common interests and knowing the other person likes them) are easily programmable, as robots become ever more human-like in appearance.

"It may sound a little weird, but it isn't; love and sex with robots are inevitable,” Mr Levy told, (particularly for) ‘people who find it hard to form relationships, because they are extremely shy, or have psychological problems, or are just plain ugly or have unpleasant personalities," he said.

A publicist for San Diego sex doll manufacturers RealDoll identified more potential robot lovers in June, when she gave an interview to local newspaper San Diego City Beat, in June. Ms Shelly Couture said ‘vertically challenged 35- to 65-year-old men with disposable incomes’ make up one of the biggest customers groups for their $6,499 dolls, with women also buying them for their husbands and boyfriends.
“One woman came to us with her tax return and, knowing that she was going to be away for a long time, bought one for her husband so he wouldn’t be fooling around on her,” she said. Good or bad chemistry? ‘All fits serve a psychological purpose designed to protect ourselves from discomfort. Most couples aren't aware of their fit until something happens to change it. We all grow and mature, our needs change and our relationships need to adapt to those changes . . ‘)
