Leading London department store Selfridges declared that fashionable men in London will be wearing pantyhose tights this winter, as they launched their first ever collection of hosiery for men.
“This winter the city’s most stylish men will have a secret weapon hidden in their trousers,” Selfridges menswear chief David Walker-Smith told the Daily Mail.
“We expect men to be wearing them not only as a way to as a way to give legs an extra boost of warmth on the chilliest nights, but as a true style statement,” he added.
Daily Telegraph fashionista Christopher Howse appeared alarmed, however, declaring ‘if wearing shorts were not bad enough, now we are told that tights for men are back’.
Well, I know that nothing can be too absurd for fashion to impose,” he sniffed, “But men in tights are an abomination.”
His reaction appears to have already been anticipated by Men in tight portal e-mancipate.net who in March were already encouraging bolder men to ‘think pink’ and consider ‘should men ever wear floral patterned pink pantyhose? ‘
“We've wrote about these (men in pink tights) images before, but now it's different, as we don't feel the need to defend anything anymore,” e-mancipate.net enthused. ‘Dare to choose pink pantyhose as part of your outfit’, they urged.
The site also offers ‘black patterned tights for the macho’, featuring a long haired Italian looking type wearing a black leather jacket, knee length trousers and satin tights.
“So simple and still hits so hard - this uber-macho design shows a traditional macho outfit completed with a pair of black, patterned tights,” the site says. “He's the boss of the gang and the look with the black tights works for him. It'll work for you, too.”
