Music has always served as an escape for Thom Jongkind and Idir Makhlaf, aka Blasterjaxx. Thom began producing at the young age of 12, and Idir played the piano since he was little. For the longest time it seemed that touring the world and making music as a sustainable career would be something they could only dream about. Throughout their teenage and young adult years, they both had different music projects – Thom produced under the name Scalix and Idir was called Macosta. They had even worked on a few projects together, but nothing serious.
In 2010, Thom was ready to turn his hobby into something more. He teamed up with another producer to form Blasterjaxx, but after two years the duo broke up and went their separate ways. Thom wasn’t ready to give up. He maintained the name Blasterjaxx and approached Idir. The two joined forces and were ready to turn their dream into a reality. Both decided to drop out of school and pursue their musical dream full-¬time. Even though it was a difficult decision at the time, they never looked back. Not long after, the release of their first EP, Reborn, on Laidback Luke’s Mixmash Records, was a fact.
Fast-¬forward to 2013, their big breakthrough. Tiesto picks up their song “Loud and Proud” and releases it on his label, Musical Freedom. Tiesto’s approval served as a pivotal point in their music careers. It led to the opportunity to do an official remix for Tiesto’s world-¬renowned trance hit “Adagio for Strings”, and later a collaboration with him on a remix for Ultra Music Festival’s “United” 2013 anthem. Their single “Faith” charted in the Netherlands and Sweden that same year. To top off 2013, Hardwell released an edit of their original “Fifteen” on his label Revealed Recordings.
The social media numbers and peer recognition can’t be ignored, but the impact they have left on their fans is equally as powerful. Their dedication to and appreciation from fans is what keeps the duo inspired and motivated. At a time when music producers and DJs are a dime a dozen, Blasterjaxx recognize and understand the importance to stand out. They succeed in constantly evolving their music, whilst keeping true to their unique sound. They know how to take what is relevant and throw their own spin on it. Their shows largely consist of music they themselves created, edited or remixed. To reinforce their sound, they launched their own radio show “Maxximize on Air” which is broadcast through various radio stations around the world and of course available online.
With each release and show, Thom and Idir are showing the world what they are all about. They have garnered support from the biggest names in dance music including Tiesto, Hardwell, Avicii, Laidback Luke, Steve Aoki and David Guetta. Their music has been released on the most respected labels (i.e. Dim Mak, Mixmash Records , Musical Freedom, Revealed Recordings and Spinnin’ Records). Even though they have already accomplished so much since their joint start a short while ago, you can expect even bigger things from these two in the near future.
