Tell us a little bit about how you got started DJing. Who was your biggest inspiration?
I got into DJing in my last year of high school when I saw a lot of my older mates playing in clubs around the city, I was underage at the time getting into gigs with them and the first time I stepped foot into a club I knew for sure that’s what I wanted to be doing! After a year or 2 of DJing I realised it was production that was going to get me further and I discovered Afrojack’s music which was definitely my biggest inspiration at the time, I just researched everything he was using and that was how I found my feet with production!
Will this be your first time in Macao? Is there anything that you are looking forward to doing or seeing in particular?
Yea this will be my first time in Macau and I can’t wait! I’ve heard so much about the club and it sounds unreal! Can’t wait to check it out and maybe play a couple games of blackjack as well.
How do you feel that DJing and producing has changed over the last few years?
I think over the past couple years it’s become essential to start producing as well as DJing. It’s also become really important to move with the times I think, in the sense of technology as well as changing genres and styles. I think those people that think they can do the same thing forever are going to be left behind. Obviously there’s some exceptions to that, such as Carl Cox and all those other legends but I really do think you've got to move with the times and stay fresh and current while at the same time staying true to your sound.
What was your favourite memory of 2014 so far and what do you have planned for the rest of the year?
My favourite memory would have to be my first US tour! It was so unreal to play my music overseas and actually get a crazy response from the other side of the world! The rest of the year is going to be exciting, all of November I’ll be playing shows in Asia and then festival season start here in Australia with Stereosonic, so that should be insane! On the music side I’ve got about 7-8 tracks ready to go as well so I’m hoping we can get as many out before end of year as possible, exciting times!
What can we expect from your upcoming performance at Cubic?
Expect a lot of energy and a stack of brand new exclusives! I’ve been pretty busy in the studio since coming back from the states so I've got a lot of fresh new materials.
Aside from your DJ equipment, name your top three touring essentials.
Beef Jerky, Clear eye drops and my noise cancelling headphones (really helps you sleep on planes!)
What is the weirdest thing that you’ve seen from the DJ booth?
One time a dude was so stoked with my set that he offered his girlfriend to me... He was being 100% legit as well, it was definitely the weirdest and most awkward thing to happen to me while I was playing.
Do you have any pre-gig rituals?
If I don't have a new track of mine to play then I’ll always prepare at least 1 bootleg/mashup for each show. I always need to come with something fresh, it gets me pumped and it’s always something new for the crowd!
Who in your opinion are the best up-and-coming producers at the moment?
I’d have to say Matt Watkins, Olly James and Dirty Palm! These guys have all done tunes for my label and I’ve seen their progress. I have been supporting all their tunes too so it’s really good to see these young guns killing it!
If you weren’t a DJ/Producer what would you be doing?
I’m actually a property valuer! I went to University and graduated and everything, but after working for a couple months at a desk I just knew it wasn't for me! Luckily my DJing was starting to pick up, so it was a risky move to quit that job but it ended up paying off after the first couple months where I started getting booked interstate.
What tracks/ projects can we look forward to in the upcoming months?
I’ve got a couple collaborations with Halfway House, Joel Fletcher and Borgeous, 2 brand new solo tracks, a remix for Armarda as well as a remix for my label Club Cartel Records. I’ve been working on this radio tune as well which I’m really pumped about! Can’t wait to show everyone!
What would be your dream collaboration?
It would have to be Afrojack or Martin Garrix! I’m a big fan of both so it’d be insane to work on something together.
