During any conversation about techno in Asia, one name is sure to always come up: that of TAKKYU ISHINO.
In his home country of Japan, Takkyu Ishino is a bona fide superstar: he’s the main face of techno in the nation, and also a co-founder of the mega-selling synth-pop duo Denki Groove, who have been described as Japan’s answer to Depeche Mode.
But as a DJ and techno producer, Takkyu Ishino has blazed his own trail. By taking the tough industrial rhythms of German techno and softening them with a uniquely Japanese atmosphere, Takkyu helped ignite the techno explosion in Japan, and his impact continues to reverberate until today.
Takkyu Ishino released his first solo album in 1995 and started performing as a DJ soon after. The global techno crowd instantly took a shine to his sound, and he became much in demand as a DJ in Europe – also becoming the first Japanese DJ to perform at the Love Parade, in 1998 in front of 1.5 million people. His popularity in Europe led to collaboration with Westbam, an icon of techno in Germany.
Since 1999, Takkyu Ishino has been organising the renowned WIRE festival, the biggest annual celebration of techno in Japan, as well as regularly performing around the world and at his home country’s top clubs such as Womb and AgeHa alongside the younger breed of Japanese techno DJs who he inspired to take to the decks.
Forget any preconceptions you may have about techno from Japan: Takkyu Ishino drops some seriously punishing grooves and will be pushing the revamped Volar sound system to its absolute limits on August 23, when he’ll be supported by the PUSH crew and special guest Taku Hirayama.
As usual, earplugs will not be provided.
