We are excited to welcome back Dr. Joseph (Backdrop, UK) to Social Room! Those of you who caught his last set of trippy acid tunes in our room will know not to miss his second appearance!
Dr.Joseph has opened for the likes of Jane Fitz, Helena Hauff, Ben UFO, Juan Atkins, Robert Hood, Daniel Avery, Objekt, Dax J and many more. As Backdrop & Skew-Whiff co-founder and resident DJ, his loyal local reputation for fierce techno in the North of England has encouraged a growing international touring schedule. With upcoming gigs at Contact Tokyo, Beton Brut Seoul, TAG Chengdu & Savage Hanoi before heading off to DJ in Melbourne and New York City. 2018 is set to be by far his busiest year yet and we know he is very excited and proud to return to Social Room alongside Ocean Lam!
A techno hypnotist & record obsessive in search of those heads down & sweaty techno stompers, brazen break beat, rancid acid and tripping electro, his diverse record collection and bold approach flourish at all times of day & night. Peak-time sets at Jane Fitz & Jade Seattle’s Night Moves tent at Field Maneuevrs Festival, The Social Room in Hong Kong, Gazette Club in Romania and the legendary Jaded after-hours at Corsica Studios, have ensured Dr. Joseph’s determination to learn the intricacies of the world’s dance floors is becoming fulfilled. Impressing with his dynamic closing set after Mumdance and Nina Kraviz at Sheffield’s Hope Works, he was invited back to open No Bounds Festival, joining the bill with Jeff Mills & DJ Stingray. He has also just returned from playing Drugstore Belgrade (Serbia) & Klub K4 Ljubljana (Slovenia).
His monthly KMAH Radio residency “Skew-Whiff” challenges him and his guests to dig for the most daring records they can find, further fuelling the unique surprises he can offer the dance-floor. You can listen to all of these shows, including his most recent episode with guest Ocean Lam, at www.drjosephmusic.com.
Eager to further his knowledge and contribute to this culture which binds us, alongside the rest of the Backdrop crew he curated and organised a panel discussion and charitable party entitled “Sounds Of Solidarity: Power & Politics of Dance Music” earlier this year. Saoirse, SIREN & Room 4 Resistance Berlin collectives were all speaking and DJing afterwards within Cosmic Ballroom, Newcastle. This was aimed at discussing and improving diversity within electronic music, creating safer dance floors and venues for all and especially women, those of non-binary gender, LGBTIQ communities and ethnic minorities.
As a music journalist for backdroplive.com and drjosephmusic.com, he has carefully curated a podcast series from the likes of Santiago Salazar, Shinra, Bas Amro, Carl H and many more as well as in-depth features with Objekt, Saoirse, Honey Soundsystem & others. An insatiable appetite for club culture is also behind his recent “Sonic Sanctuary” series where he investigates the world’s most dedicated, underground nightclubs, speaking with resident DJs, long-standing guests, loyal dancers and programmers from clubs as diverse as The Pickle Factory (London) to No Way Back Detroit.
